About Lands End Cornwall.
Lands End is located approximately nine miles west of Penzance and it is the most westerly point of the English mainland. This famous landmark at the tip of Cornwall is where the granite on which the county sits meets the Atlantic Ocean and the awe inspiring scenery of savage cliffs, reefs and steep sided inlets is spectacular. The rugged cliffs and coastline at Lands End are amongst the most dramatic in Cornwall
On a clear day, the Isles of Scilly can clearly be seen on the horizon and closer to shore is the Longships Lighthouse which is just over a mile out to sea. This 35 meter high lighthouse was established in 1795 and automated in 1988. From the cliffs at Lands End it is also possible to see about six miles out to sea to the southwest the Wolf Rock lighthouse.
The Northern and Southern sections of the Cornish Coastal Footpath meet at Lands End the pinnacle of the longest continuous footpath in Britain covering the coast from Poole Harbour and Dorset to Somerset and the Bristol Channel over 500 miles in all. Walking the coastal path is a wonderful way to enjoy the day but care must always be taken as some sections are close to the cliff-edge. The famous signpost at Lands End must be one of the most photographed in the world. From this spot New York is 3174 miles and the Isles Of Scilly 28.
The name Lands End has a particular meaning because it is often used to show the length of Britain when walks and charitable events take place between Lands End and the Scottish village of John o' Groats the most northeasterly settlement in mainland Britain. The phrase Lands End to John o' Groats is frequently quoted for a long journey.
There is also a tourist complex at Lands End.
